Step the Beat Music Fundamentals is our unique group lesson "pre-requisite" to private lessons. Through our combined teaching experience of more than 50 years, the instructors of Musical Chairs have created an innovative introductory music class designed to build a strong music foundation prior to beginning private instrument instruction. Our 4 areas of focus are:
Once these basic skills are mastered separate from the instrument, children can move into specific instruments with more confidence and significantly less frustration.
Step the Beat also works on building a strong practice routine which can be carried over into private lessons.

Instrument Intensive
The immersion program includes the benefits of private lessons, yet eliminates the largest obstacle: at home practice. In the early stages of learning any musical instrument, most students do not have enough core music knowledge or good practice habits to successfully practice at home without some level of supervision. This is the primary reason why many students become discouraged and fail during their first year of lessons.
Our immersion program is designed to help students get through the initial learning curve through more frequent lessons with "in studio" practice occurring immediately following the lesson. The immersion program is recommended for a period of at least 4 weeks. Independent practice at home is not required and, in fact, is discouraged to avoid developing bad habits. Once a certain core music foundation and a strong practice routine has been established, students can transition to standard weekly lessons.
Students work directly with an instructor for 30 to 45 minutes and then apply what they have learned during a 15 to 30 minute practice session in the studio immediately following the lesson. Time frames are dependent on the student's age. The process gives the student access to their instructor should questions arise when they try to apply what was learned in the lesson. This builds good practice skills from the very beginning and dramatically improves the student's success rate. Sessions are held 2-3 times per week.
Tuition:
$40 per 45 minute lesson including studio practice time
$35 per 30 minute lesson including studio practice time
